Mr. Shaukat Raza, who has been working as an RA in the AI Lab for the past 15 months, has been awarded UTS Tuition Scholarship and a 3 year Australian Research Council stipend to undertake a PhD at the University of Technology, Sydney. This award would further stenthen the ongoing collaboration between the Innovation and Enterprise Research Lab at UTS and the Artificial Intelligence Lab at IBA.
AI Lab has won a research grant of Rs. 8.5 Millions from ICT R&D Fund of Pakistan to build an Anti-Money Laundering System. This is a joint project between the AI Lab and Credit-Chex, Inc. The grant would allow the lab to offer RA position to 2 MS Students and 1 PhD student for the duration of the project(18 months).
Ms. Saleha Raza is visiting the Center for Quantum Computation & Intelligent Systems (QCIS) at University of Technology Sydney for
5 months (September, 2011 - January, 2012). She is primarily working with the UTS RoboCup Soccer team - winner of 2004 and runner-up of 2008 RoboCup Soccer
competitions in the Standard Platform League. The trip is sponsored by the Australian Govt. under Endeavour Postdoctoral Research
Fellowship.
Ms. Saleha Raza is working on serveral research problems related to imitation-based learning, path planning optimization and RoboCup
strategy modeling using First Order Bayesian Networks.
AI Lab has won a research grant of Rs. 2.5 Millions from Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. The grant would allow the lab to offer fully funded RA position to 3 MS Students (each year for the next 3 years). The grant would help in further strengthing the Karachi Koalas team.
AI Lab has got a Nao Robot from University of Technology, Sydney. This autonmous robot is worth 7500 Euros and is an invaluable gift
from UTS. Nao is a programmable and autonomous humanoid robot. It contains gyro, accelerometer, ultrsonic and sound sensors. In addition,
it has two cameras and capability to recognize faces and shapes. The robot would immensely help the AI lab in continuing the collaboration
with the Innovation and Enterprise Research Lab at UTS. The following video demonstrates some of the capabilities of the Nao robot:

Dr. Faraz Zaidi, Assistant Professor at PAF-KIET, was invited as a guest lecturer on 31st of May, 2011. Dr. Zaidi talked about his research work on image processing and data visualization. He also shared his PhD experience and offered invvaluable advice to students currently enrolled in the PhD program at IBA.
Dr. Tariq Mahmood, Assistant Professor at FAST-NU, was invited as a guest lecturer on 20th of May, 2011. Dr. Mahmood explained his current research on the application of reinforcement learning in building an optimal recommender system. He also talked about his new project A-Eye which is a Computer Vision system designed to aid Cricket Umpires.
Dr. Zareen Syed, Assistant Professor at FAST-NU, was invited as a guest lecturer on 18th of May, 2011. Her talk focused on "Wikitology", the research project she was involved with during her PhD at University of Maryland. The Wikitology project aims to extract knowledge from Wikipedia articles with the help of ontologies. Dr. Zareen Syed also explained the software she has developed to support the Wikitology research.
Dr. Mashhood Ishaque, who recently finished his PhD from Tufts University (USA), was invited as a guest lecturer on 13th of May, 2011. Dr. Ishaque shared his research work on geometric data structures and its application in various disciplines including wireless sensor networks and path planning. He also discussed his PhD experience and offered invaluable advice to students currently enrolled in the PhD program at IBA.
Dr. Sajjad Haider is visiting the Center for Quantum Computation & Intelligent Systems (QCIS) at University of Technology Sydney for
5 months (July - Nov, 2010). He is primarily working with the UTS RoboCup Soccer team - winner of 2004 and runner-up of 2008 RoboCup Soccer
competitions in the Standard Platform League. The trip is sponsored by the Australian Govt. under Endeavour Postdoctoral Research
Fellowship.
In addition to getting exposure of Nao based humanoid robots, Dr. Haider is working on several
research problems related to locomotion, localization, computer vision and team strategy building in RoboCup Soccer.
His experience of working with a world class team would enable FCS, IBA to start similar activities in Pakistan and
to prepare its students to participate in one of the most popular and exciting competitions of Computer Science.
In addition to the RoboCup related activities, Dr. Haider is also making efforts to build long-term research
collaboration between IBA's AI Lab and several research groups at UTS working on belief revision, machine learning,
patent analysis and information/knowledge extraction.
